A Docu-Concert by Dan Blegen
Woody Guthrie gave voice to a generation weighed down by the forces of nature and economics during the Great Depression. His simple yet evocative Dust Bowl ballads still ring true as authentic expressions of the American spirit.
Colorado author and performer Dan Blegen tells Guthrie’s life story and sings the songs that have inspired America in his one-man show Hard Travelin’: Woody Guthrie’s Life and Songs.
Guthrie’s ballads dignified the lives of the folks he met while roaming the country: farmers and factory workers, miners and mill workers. He took up their battles – and his guitar – whenever their basic freedoms were threatened. He fell in love with the West and composed euphoric songs of praise for the natural wonders he found here. During World War II he sang the praises of those in the ranks of the American military in their fight against fascism.
Later, Guthrie’s music permeated the folk music revival of the 1950s and ‘60s, and his signature tune, This Land Is Your Land, resurfaced as a rallying cry of the civil rights era.
Hard Travelin’ is a unique presentation, both informative and entertaining. You’ll want to sing along with more than two dozen familiar tunes, including Roll on, Columbia; Union Maid; Hard Travelin’; The Reuben James; and So Long, It’s Been Good to Know You. It’ll be a hoot!
